Cangkuang Temple

Cangkuang is the name of a type of pandanus trees (Pandanus furcatus) used the community as a material for making hoods, floor mats, and pembukus palm sugar. Along with the turnaround time, cangkuang name immortalized as the name of a village and also the name of a lake / situ, the Village of Cangkuang and the Situ Cangkuang. Later, a temple located in the region was also given the name of the Cangkuang Tample.

The temple was discovered by Prof. Cangkuang. Harsoyo and Drs. Uka Tjandrasasmita, Leles History Research Team, on December 19, 1966. The study was sponsored by Mr. Idji Hatadji, Director of CV. Haruman. This temple was discovered thanks to the scientists report in the Netherlands named Vordeman Bataviaasch Genootschap Minutes, published in 1893, which mentions the existence of an ancient tomb and remains of the statue of Lord Shiva in the area Leles.

Judging from the shape of the building, the experts argue that the ancient temple Cangkuang stood since the 8th century. However, if viewed from the simplicity of decoration, manufacturing techniques, and reports the Chinese legend, is not impossible Cangkuang Temple building has existed since the 7th century, concurrent with the construction of other temples in Java.

The location of Cangkuang Temple is about 46 kilometers from Bandung and 20 kilometers from downtown of Garut.

Visitors who use public transportation can take the bus to Garut. From the Garut, continued his? journey by riding public transportation to Leles. From the edge of Highway of Leles, the location of the temple is about 3 kilometers. From here, visitors can take a horse cart, motorcycle taxi, or walking about 35 minutes. After passing through the Kampung Pulo, visitors will cross Situ Cangkuang with getek to the location of the temple.
